Bordeaux Region including Saint-Emilion

We spent two nights in the Bordeaux wine region of France. Most of our time was spent in the medieval village of Saint-Emilion. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ancient buildings and streets are interesting but the area is most known for its excellent wine, in particular merlot. The best vineyards produce Grand Cru Class wines which can sell for 1,000 Euros ($1,400) or more per bottle! We stayed at the Franc Grace-Dieu B&B located in the midst of a beautiful vineyard.

  • The wonderful wine of Saint-Emilion is on display throughout the village. It is known world-wide for its dark red wine, in particular merlot.
  • Refrigerator magnets representing the many vineyards in the Satint-Emilion region.
  • A typical wine store in Saint-Emilion. They all want to ship a case home (about 100 Euros for shipment - plus the cost of wine)
  • The wines from the best vineyards are called Grand Cru. Those of especially good vintage years cost well over 1,000 Euros ($1,400) per bottle.
  • We did some wine tasting here and purchased this excellent Grant Cru (for less than 1,000 Euros - far less!)
  • Jan enjoying some Grand Cru at our B&B - a former farmhouse located in the midst of a beautiful vineyard - the Chateau Franc Grace-Dieu.
  • An "old vine" which produce the best - but fewer grapes. Vines live about 70 years.
  • An evening rainbow near our B&B.
  • A symbol for a bank in the Bordeaux wine region - appropriate enough.
