Iceland

  • Atlantic Puffins are typically found in Iceland near the ocean and high on grassy cliffs. These were photographed from a boat along the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
  • This puffin is bringing in a fish to feed its young. This photo was taken during a Puffin Tour to a far distant cliff along the Southern Coast.
  • Puffins are a delight to watch land. This one is landing near its nest that is burrowed in a small hole among the tall grass.
  • One of my best images of the trip. This puffin landed about 10 feet from my camera/tripod set-up and as a bonus had two small fish in its beak. It continued to pose as I shot photos.
  • Atlantic puffins are often seen on the sea as they hunt and dive for small fish.
  • Puffins fly very fast and therefore difficult to photograph. This photo was taken at 1/3200 of a second from a moving boat.
  • Arctic terns are very prevalent in Iceland and are unique birds. They summer in the Arctic and then fly to the Antarctic for the winter. Over their 15 year life they fly the equivalent of three round trips to the moon making them the record holder of distance traveled by birds.
  • This Arctic Tern was in an unusual position with its head turned upward.
  • 34 sculptured bird eggs made of granite. The granite matches the color and shape of local birds. A very unusual sight in the small fishing village of Djupivogur. in 1627 this village was raided by N. African pirates who looted the town and carried residents back to Africa as slaves.
  • Jan with one of the granite bird eggs. The granite sculptures are much larger but replicate the shape and color of the actual eggs. The Japanese sculpture searched the world for the correct-colored granite.
  • A Eurasian Oystercatcher on a mission on a very wet and windy day.
  • Greyleg Goose
  • Greyleg Geese were seen frequently.
  • Black-Headed Gulls during mating season near Hofn in Southeast Iceland.
  • Gulls on an iceberg at the Glacier Lagoon.
  • European Shag adult and two chicks on an island cliff near the fishing village of Stykkisholmur on the Snaefelisnes Peninsula.
  • Black-Legged Kittiwake adult and chick on a cliff near Stykkisholmur. This photo was taken from a boat.
  • Whooper Swans build their nest on the ground. This family was very close to the highway.
  • Male Common Eider. Very prevalent throughout Iceland. This one was floating on the icy Glacier Lagoon.
  • Female Common Eiders with their young near one of our hotels.
