Mont Saint Michel
Mont Saint Michel is an ancient abbey built upon a rock island within a bay. During high tide it is surrounded by water but during low tide by only sand. It was inhabited by the Benedictine Monks starting in 966 and generally flourished until 1793 (French Revolution) when it was closed and turned into a prison. While the monks were there it was a major site of Christian pilgrimages during Medieval times. It is currently inhabited by monks once again.

The abey was successfully defended against the British and the Hugunots. The sea surrounding the abbey was an important defensive feature.
