Versailles - Palace and Gardens

Versailles is a beautiful palace with hundreds of acres of fabulous landscape gardens. It was built by King Louis XIV and was the residence of three kings (Louis XIV, XV and XVI) for a century. Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette were taken by the French Revolutionist back to Paris where they were guillotined in 1792.

  • King Louis XIV, France's greatest king.  Reigned from 1643-1715.  He was very progressive and, among other projects, connected the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea with a canal and series of locks.  We saw those in southern France.
